The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Generations (a wine normally meant for very long-term aging, as most of it is aged in new oak barrels for 14+ months) is a similar blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre, all coming from the oldest vines of the estate. This wine can be a real blockbuster, but it often needs at least a decade of cellaring before drinking. Not surprisingly, the 2007 Cuvee des Generations is showing a lot of new oak right now and needs to be forgotten for 5-7 years. My instincts suggest it is less of a blockbuster than vintages such as 2005, 2001, or 1998. The wine displays an inky purple color and a dense, sweet nose of black fruits, camphor, toast, and truffle. A rich full-bodied wine that also has extremely high levels of tannin and oak, it is shut down at present. This is a hefty, very impressive wine with lots of upside potential, but any prospective purchaser should forget it for at least 5-7 years. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030+. RP91 @2009
